The Ways to Improve the Instruction of Spoken Englishin Chinese Secondary Schools
1. Introduction
Nowadays, many people are learning foreign language in China. The most widely learnt language is English with the education reform going on this do exert a lot of pressures on the English-teaching staffs. The English-teaching staffs should not just sit back waiting. Instead, the teacher especially the teacher who teach oral English should take initiative and do something in their classes to make both teaching and learning more productive.
If one learns a foreign language, he/she must realize that speaking is the hardest among the four language abilities--listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Meanwhile speaking instruction is most challenge for most of language teachers, why? First, unlike reading or writing, speaking happens in real time. Usually the person you are talking to is waiting for you to speak right then. Second, when you speak, you can not edit and revise what you wish to say, as you can if you are writing.
In language teaching, the four skills are described in terms of their direction. Language generated by the learner (speech or writing) is referred to as productive. Language directed at the learner (reading or listening) is called receptive. Another important idea is the channel, which refers to the medium of the message (aural/oral or written). Thus, speaking is the productive aural/oral skill. It consists of producing systematic verbal utterance to convey meaning.
In some person's mind teaching speaking is a simple process. In fact, it is hard if you want to become a perfect oral English teacher.
